IFS Therapy is a somatic therapy model that uses archetypes in an inner dialogue to help uncover false beliefs, pain and suffering. We then dialogue with the suffering as if it is a personified inner part of us. In this inner dialogue there is the Self; the person in their purest form that works to have compassion to the parts. Some have compared this to the Observant Mind in Buddhism. And the conceptualization of the Self in IFS Therapy, as very comparable with the idea of one's Buddha-nature Self.

In session the IFS Therapist guides the person in special ways of observing the inner part, that help the child part get needs met, that it was unable to get met long ago. In doing so, the part is able to release it's unnatural role that it has taken on, which is the very thing causing the suffering. This.might look like a compelled behavior, or compelled thinking that is very invisible that drives some menal health symptom like anxiety, panic, trauma responses or depression. The work of IFS is to create safety to these child parts in ways that are honoring and respectful, so the part is able to take in the update that they can be safe now, and get heir needs met now.
